Introduction

If the frame is deformed, it’s important to replace it to make sure the new screen will mount correctly and won’t suffer damage from uneven pressure.

Due to the device’s design, you must remove the lithium-ion battery to access the display cables. If the battery was deformed during removal replace it with a new one—reusing a deformed battery is a potential safety hazard.

Before disassembling your device, discharge the battery below 25%. The battery can catch fire and/or explode if accidentally punctured, but the chances of that happening are much lower if discharged.

Note: This guide instructs you to replace only the screen while leaving the original frame and motherboard in place. However, some replacement screens for this phone come pre-installed in a new frame (a.k.a. chassis), which requires a very different procedure. Make sure you have the correct part before starting this guide.

You’ll need replacement adhesive to reattach components when reassembling the device.

Step 1

              Heat the rear glass

Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the rear glass for at least two minutes to loosen the adhesive underneath.
A hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may also be used, but be careful not to overheat the phone—the display and internal battery are both susceptible to heat damage.

Step 2

              Insert an opening pick

Secure a suction handle to the bottom edge of the back cover, as close to the edge as possible.
If the back cover is cracked, the suction handle may not stick. Try lifting it with strong tape, or superglue the suction handle in place and allow it to cure so you can proceed.
Lift the back cover with the suction handle to create a small gap between the back cover and the frame.
In case you have trouble creating a gap, apply more heat to further soften the adhesive. Follow the iOpener instructions to avoid overheating.
Insert an opening pick into the gap you created.
Slide the opening pick to the bottom right corner to slice the adhesive.
Leave the opening pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Secure a suction handle to the bottom edge of the back cover, as close to the edge as possible.

Insert a second opening pick at the bottom edge of your phone.
Slide the opening pick to the bottom left corner to slice the adhesive.
Leave the opening pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

              Slice the adhesive

If the adhesive becomes hard to cut, it has most likely cooled down. Use your iOpener for one to two minutes to reheat it.
Insert a third opening pick at the bottom left corner of your phone.
Slide the opening pick along the left edge of your phone to slice the adhesive.
Leave the opening pick in the top left corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

If the adhesive becomes hard to cut, it has most likely cooled down. Use your iOpener for one to two minutes to reheat it.

Slide the opening pick along the left edge of your phone to slice the adhesive.

Leave the opening pick in the top left corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Slide the opening pick along the top edge to slice the adhesive.
Leave the opening pick in the top right corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Slide the opening pick along the right edge of the back cover to slice the remaining adhesive.

              Remove the back cover

Remove the back cover.
Apply new adhesive where necessary after cleaning the relevant areas with isopropyl alcohol (>90%).
Secure the new back cover with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided adhesive tape. After installing the rear glass, apply strong, steady pressure to your phone for several minutes to help the adhesive form a good bond—a stack of heavy books works well.

Apply new adhesive where necessary after cleaning the relevant areas with isopropyl alcohol (>90%).

Secure the new back cover with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided adhesive tape. After installing the rear glass, apply strong, steady pressure to your phone for several minutes to help the adhesive form a good bond—a stack of heavy books works well.

              Unfasten the motherboard cover screws

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the eleven 3.9 mm-long screws securing the motherboard cover.

              Pry up the motherboard cover

Insert the tip of an opening pick underneath the bottom right edge of the motherboard cover.
Slide the opening pick along the right edge of the motherboard cover to unhinge the plastic clips and pry it up.

              Remove the motherboard cover

              Disconnect the battery cable

Use a spudger to disconnect the battery cable by prying the connector straight up from its socket.

              Disconnect the power and volume button flex cable

Use a spudger to disconnect the power and volume button flex cable by prying the connector straight up from its socket.
Use a pair of tweezers or your fingers to carefully fold the power and volume button flex cable to the side in order to get free access to the battery.

Step 13

              Disconnect the interconnect cable

During the following step do not fold the cable sharply and only bend it to avoid cable damage.
Use a spudger to disconnect the interconnect cable by prying the connector straight up from its socket.
Fold the interconnect flex cable towards the charging port in order to get access to the battery pull tabs.
You might want to use a small piece of tape to temporarily stick the cables onto your working surface to avoid accidentally damaging them during the battery removal.

During the following step do not fold the cable sharply and only bend it to avoid cable damage.

Step 14

              Peel off the battery pull-tabs

Take care not to puncture or bend the battery with your tool—a punctured or bent battery may leak dangerous chemicals or cause a thermal event.
Use a pair of blunt nose tweezers or a clean fingernail to peel the orange adhesive strip labelled with an A off the battery.

Step 15

              Remove the battery

Grab both pull–tab ends labelled with an A and pull up on the orange adhesive strip to lift the battery out of its recess and swing it up to an upright position.
Although these adhesive tabs are supposed to make the battery removal easier, they may require some force. In case you’re having trouble removing the battery, you can apply a heated iOpener to the center of the display to loosen the adhesive underneath.

During reassembly, temporarily reconnect the battery to the motherboard to help align it correctly. Disconnect the battery after it is seated.
In case you’re replacing the adhesive sticker with a new one, peel the battery’s adhesive sticker off the midframe and clean the relevant areas with isopropyl alcohol (>90%). Let the alcohol dry before installing new adhesive.

              Disconnect the display flex cable

Use a spudger to disconnect the display flex cable by prying the connector straight up from its socket.
The display flex cable is adhered to the midframe with mild adhesive.
Use a pair of tweezers or your fingers to carefully peel the display flex cable off the midframe.

              Loosen the display adhesive

The rear camera module of the Poco X3 Pro sticks out of the midframe. In case you’re unfamiliar with this kind of repair we recommend placing a lint free cloth or similar underneath during the following steps in order to avoid damaging the lenses.
Apply a heated iOpener or a heat gun to the screen to loosen the adhesive underneath. Apply the iOpener for at least two minutes.

Once the screen is warm to touch, apply a suction cup to the bottom edge of the screen.
If your screen is badly cracked, covering it with a layer of clear packing tape may allow the suction cup to adhere. Alternatively, very strong tape may be used instead of the suction cup. If all else fails, you can superglue the suction cup to the screen.
Lift the screen with the suction handle to create a small gap between the screen and the frame.
Insert an iFlex in the gap between the midframe and the screen.

Once the screen is warm to touch, apply a suction cup to the bottom edge of the screen.

Slide the opening pick to the bottom right corner of the screen to slice its adhesive. Leave the opening pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

              Slice the adhesive

Insert a second opening pick and slide it to the bottom left corner of the screen to cut the adhesive.

When you slice near the front facing camera, insert only the tip of the opening pick to avoid damaging or smearing the camera.

Leave the opening pick in the top right corner of the screen to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

              Remove the screen

Thread the display flex cable through the gap in the midframe and remove the screen.
Apply new adhesive where it’s necessary after cleaning the relevant areas with isopropyl alcohol (>90%).
During reassembly, follow this guide in case you’re using a pre-cut adhesive card.

If possible, turn on your device and test your repair before installing new adhesive and resealing.

Compare your new replacement part to the original part—you may need to transfer remaining components or remove adhesive backings from the new part before installing.

To reassemble your device, follow the above steps in reverse order.

The best way to secure the new screen is to apply a sheet of custom-cut double-sided tape to the back of the screen.

Take your e-waste to an R2 or e-Stewards certified recycler.
