Introduction

The microphone boom allows the user to communicate via the Megalodon’s USB by voice to other devices. Unfortunately, the device will not register your voice when damaged or clogged with debris and will require a teardown and possible replacement.

Review the Razer Megalodon troubleshooting page before removing the boom, as you may not need to replace the microphone boom.

Be sure to take great care when working on the microphone. The part is fragile, and there are wires that cannot be replaced, meaning you will need a new boom and possibly a new microphone.

What you need

Step 1

              Microphone Boom
  • Remove the left ear cushion by rotating it counterclockwise as far as possible.
  • Pull the cushion upwards to remove it from the device.

Step 2

  • Remove the six 6 mm screws around the speaker housing.
  • Although it is only possible to reassemble this piece one way, you can save yourself some trouble by making a mark that lines up the speaker housing with the ear cup.

Step 4

  • There are two wires going into the boom. One powers the LED lights and the other goes to the microphone. Each wire has two smaller ones in them.
  • Cut both wires, strip the shielding, solder the new wires together, and wrap them in electrical tape or use heat shrink. Be sure to insulate the wires from each other.
  • The two sets of wires are different colors, so you can figure out which wire powers the LEDs and which goes to the microphone.
