Introduction

What you need

Step 1

              Problem Description
  • Over time, the plastic grommet that fits between the wire and the hole in the earbud will fall out. This can be caused by pulling on the wire & grommet when removing the earbud from an ear rather than tugging on the earbud’s body.

Step 2

              Find a Helper
  • You will need someone to help you hold the earbud. 3 hands will be needed: 1 to hold the earbud, 1 to push down on the grommet, and 1 to press the grommet’s flaps back into the hole.

Step 3

              Get Tools
  • You will need 2 types of tools: 1 to insert the wide flaps and 1 to poke stray bits fully into the hole.
  • For the wide flaps, use a 2.0 flathead bit. Do not use a 1.0 bit; it is too narrow.
  • For the stray bits, the iFixit plastic spudger works great.

Step 4

              Reinsert Flaps
  • As your helper holds the earbud firmly, press down on the grommet with one hand so that the flaps are pressed against the earbud. Then, press the flaps down into the hole using the screwdriver.
  • Once the flaps are back in, use the spudger to poke around the hole. This ensures that there are no bits still hanging out of the hole.
